High-denier DTY is a bulky polyester yarn made for filling. It usually sits inside a fabric or a yarn structure rather than on the surface, and its job is to add thickness and softness. The common range covers 600D, 900D, 1200D, 1500D and 1800D. The higher the denier, the more volume one end can supply, which is why 1200D and 1500D are popular when a product needs a clearly fuller hand feel.
In circular knitting, high-denier DTY is fed in as a filling yarn behind the face yarn. It gives the fabric a thicker, fluffier body without a separate wadding layer, so a cost-effective ticking fabric looks fuller and feels more comfortable to lie on. 1200D and 1500D are the usual choices. 600D and 900D suit lighter, thinner constructions, while 1800D gives the heaviest loft.

Thick, soft chunky yarn is often made by wrapping a knitted tube around a bulky core. High-denier DTY works well as that core because it keeps the tube round and plump. The finished yarn is used for hand-knitted blankets, bags, hats, home décor and pet beds. Heavier deniers such as 1500D and 1800D are chosen when the yarn needs to look especially thick.
Made from finer filaments, high-denier DTY becomes a soft, absorbent yarn suited to mop yarn and similar cleaning products. It also offers good strength and elongation, so it holds up to repeated use and washing.
Start from the fabric weight and the hand feel you want, then check the result against your knitting machine gauge. A small trial run is the safest way to confirm the final choice.
| Denier | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 600D–900D | Lighter filling, thinner fabric |
| 1200D | Balanced filling for general mattress fabric |
| 1500D | Fuller loft, thicker fabric, chunky yarn core |
| 1800D | Maximum bulk |
